Our Values

What We’re About.

We are a values-driven company. We are here to provide the best service, offer compelling experiences, and do our best to adhere to ethical tourism practices. What does that mean in practice?

Our Histories.

We strive to make our histories meaningful for our audiences. To do this:

They will reflect contemporary historical debates, not myths from 50 years ago.

We will do this by pairing them with archival footage, personal accounts, and any other method we can devise to bridge the gap between the past and today.

We will tell the whole story and not shy away from the “bad stuff” in history. In fact, we will strive to lift up the stories and accomplishments of people who have been oppressed in history and whose experiences have been ignored by too many tellings of history.

We are stridently and unapologetically anti-fascist and anti-racist. Our histories are founded in the principles that discrimination and hierarchies based upon who you are (rather than what you do) is wrong.

And still, we think that history can be fun

Even as we strive to be gently and cleverly challenging with our clients, always pushing people to think about the past differently, we bring joy and humor into our tours as a core part of living a full life.

Ethical Tourism.

Tourism has become a large part of the Portuguese economy, but its negative impacts on local people can no longer be ignored. Often the money generated by tourism does not benefit the people most impacted by it.

Use local suppliers rather than large multinationals whenever possible.

Recommend accommodations that do not worsen the current housing crisis.

Travel by public transportation whenever practical (we are not in traffic, we are traffic).

Develop tours that encourage people to go beyond the most-visited sites, in order to spread the benefits and defray the impacts.

Foreground the stories of the people impacted by tourism in Portugal, and the debates over tourism.
